Being a nurse, I can completely agree with the statement that chronic back pain hits the nurses in the most alarming way. Several studies have proved that nursing profession ranks second when it comes to the back pain problems after the heavy industry field of profession, resulting in the high number of compensation claims to the nursing workers.
Pain in the back is known to be as the highly common disorder present in every other person after the patients of cold and respiratory problems. According to the collected statistics, the number of back pain sufferers that pay a visit to the doctor is more than 6 million per year. Improper way of lifting, bending and rotating are the main causes of the severe pain in the back. Not just the care-giving nurses but also the workers of the heavy industry are among the patients of a severe backache because their profession demands a great deal of work that can put the stress on the back muscle and back joints.

Encountering the backache problem in the nursing profession not only results in the bearing of intense pain during work but also cause loss of salary due to medical leaves, extensive medical charges, and medical claims issues. Eleven billion dollars is the yearly amount that goes to the reimbursement of the medical claims only related to back pain problems. Moreover, the expenses get its toll due to administrative fees, wastage of time to make the replacement of the nurse for the leaving period of back injury and the lost hours of productivity.
Rules for the Nurses to Follow
As a nurse, I make sure to follow the given set of rules while lifting or bending during work hours that can prevent me from landing to any dangerous back injury or chronic back pain. Moreover, it can also save the nurses from spending the hefty amount in back pain treatment options.
- Always take a base support by spreading the legs to the hip width. Never keep the two feet joined or closely linked while doing any nursing task. Giving a desirable gap can make the base strong with higher stability.
- Whenever a nurse has to lift anything from the floor or any lower area, always make the right bending by using the knees and hip joint. Never bend the back, rather keep it straight and not use it in lifting.
- To balance the lifting object or patient, always keep it close to the body so that center of gravity of the object lies within your base. It avoids any type of dropping and keeps you away from back pain as well.
