All You Need to Know About RFID Technology – Pros & Cons

RFID advantages disadvantages

RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is a technology which is used to identify different items in the inventory, to read information from a credit card or Passport, for the tracking of different items, animals, traffic, students and even it is used to collect the toll tax automatically on high ways.

The information is stored in the microchips and there are various tags which have the secret information which can be read by the special detectors using the radio signals.

Types of RFID Tags

There are three different types of RFID tags which are:

  • Active Tags: In this type, the microchip requires a battery and a transmitter to interact with the RFID reader.
  • Passive Tags: This type of tags don’t require a battery, it gets the power from the reader itself and communicates with the RFID reader.
  • Semi-Passive Tags: Semi-Passive tags require a battery to power the chip. But they get the power from the reader for communication.

Advantages and Disadvantages of RFID

Advantages

  • It is easy to install the RFID technology in animals by injecting the chip. It will provide easy tracking about the age, vaccination, and other relevant data about that specific animal.
  • It provides extra security as it can’t be easily replicated like barcodes.
  • For the retail business, the big stores use the RFID technology for the maintenance of their stock and during the logistics and transportation, it is easy to record the inventory. DAIFUKU is renowned for providing RFID Singapore solutions for recording the stocks and inventory with this technology.
  • For expensive items like jewelry, it provides extra security. If RFID chips are attached and the buzzer is installed at the exit, no one can take out the jewelry unofficially.

  • On toll plazas, vehicles can have this RFID microchip inside the car and the RFID reader at the toll plaza will read the details and deduct the toll tax on motorways and high ways. It provides the smooth movement of traffic and saves a lot of time for vehicles.

Disadvantages

  • The RFID technology is relatively expensive as compared to the barcode system, so it is difficult to afford this technology for new businesses.
  • If the RFID chip is enclosed in a metal case or in liquid, then it will be difficult for the RFID reader to detect the object or to read the information from that microchip. Metal and liquid tend to reflect the radio frequency waves so it can create problems.
  • The mobile towers also create problems for RFID readers as they disturb the radio frequencies. The Walmart who have installed RFID tags on billions of products have reported such issues.
  • RFID skimming is a big threat for credit card holders as anyone having an RFID reader can hack your credit card which has RFID chip in it. That is why RFID blocking wallets are introduced to avoid unauthorized scanning of credit cards.

Final Words

Though the technology is not new but its use is limited. A lot of improvements are required to make the technology secure. Research work and technology improvements are in progress and you must know that RFID technology is the future.
