Canada: Country and territory-specific entry requirements

Your biometrics are required

After you apply, you’ll almost always be asked to provide biometric data such as your fingerprints and a photograph.

It all depends on where you are from, how you are traveling, and what documentation you are carrying with you when you leave.

Citizens of the Canadian Provinces

A valid Canadian passport is required for all Canadians, including dual nationals. A valid Canadian or U.S. passport is required for American Canadians to travel.

Canadian Citizens Living Permanent in Canada

To be a permanent resident of Canada, you must have a valid Permanent Resident Card or Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD).

U.S. Nationals

Citizens of the United States are required to show proof of citizenship, such as a current U.S. passport.

U.S. Citizens and Nationals with Legal Status

For all modes of travel to Canada, lawful permanent residents of the United States must present these documents:

passport from their country of citizenship or an appropriate travel document, and a valid green card or other legitimate proof of US residency.

Spanish Citizens

Spain is a country that is on the list of visa-exempt countries for Canada. So, Spanish citizens can enter Canada without a visa. But this stay will be temporary. If you want to live in Canada for a longer period of time, then you should get your Canada visa for Spanish citizens.

Citizens of Denmark

Same as Spain, Denmark is also a country whose citizens can enjoy a visa-free entry to Canada. But for a permanent stay, they must also get their Canada visa for Danish citizens.

Students and Employees

Worker and student visas are required for admission into Canada. There is no visa for a work permit or study permit. A valid tourist visa or eTA is required in most circumstances to enter Canada.

First-time students and workers will receive a visa or eTA if we approve your application and you need one. If you’re planning a trip to Canada, bring these items:

If you require an eTA and are flying into a Canadian airport, you must provide the passport that is electronically linked to your eTA together with your letter of introduction and a valid passport or travel document.

An existing work or study permit is an advantage

A valid visitor visa is essential for all visitors who are obliged to have one in order to enter Canada.

The passport that is electronically connected to your eTA must be carried at all times when flying to or from a Canadian airport if you require an eTA.

A valid study or work permit, passport, and travel document are required for travel.

Without a permit, you can work or study

As a guest, you’re allowed to work or study in Canada without a permit. You must meet the standards for citizens of your country of citizenship in order to enter Canada.

Entry in Canada to see your children and grandchildren

You may be eligible for a super visa if you are the parent or grandparent of a Canadian permanent resident or citizen. If you have a super visa, you can stay in Canada for up to two years at once. For a duration of up to ten years, it’s a visa that allows multiple entries.
